about

SIDEWAYS RAIN contains all the benchmarks of Mayone’s music: Beatle-esque pop; acoustic ballads reminiscent of Bob Dylan; and snatches of the Grateful Dead’s twang and story telling. As Shindig raves; “[Mayone] switches easily from rootsy Americana to well crafted power pop [and] he proves himself equally adept at country ballads based on banjo and fiddle. Whatever style he plays in, Mayone has a knack for a good tune.”

For Sideways RainMayone pulled together veterans of the Boston and
NYC music scenes. Produced by Andy Plaisted, it features the playing
of Russell Chudnofky (Tanya Donnelly, Lori McKenna), Jason Mercer
(Ron Sexsmith, Ani DiFranco) and James Rohr (The Blue Ribbons,
Lake Street Dive); plus, writing collaborations with Matt Keating, Peter
Mulvey and Paul Cebar.

"Steve Mayone writes some of the most beautiful melodies you'll ever hear. His new album, 'Sideways Rain,' is rife with flowing pop evoking the Beatles and Traveling Wilburys at times, along with some folk-flavored ballads that exude a romantic and bittersweet glow. It is the work of a career musician who still has much magic left in his trick bag. He touches on survival, loss, politics and renewal. It is an album you will play over and ponder because it has more depth than most of his contemporaries combined." - Steve Morse. Boston Globe staff critic, Berklee College of Music Professor

"SIDEWAYS RAIN features the best of Americana: propulsive rock, intimate folk, swampy blues and Beatle-esque pop. But what sets this album apart is the songwriting: memorable melodies combined with lyrics about parenting, futility, ugly beauty, train wrecks, lost souls, hope and the secret language of the heart. A must-hear." - Axel Haus, founder, chief creator HAUS international LLC

LYRICS

Letting You Go (steve mayone/michael hayes/andy santospago)

Well I'm letting you go loosening my grip
I'm cutting the ties and letting you drift
We rocked and we rambled lost when we gambled
Hedging our bets
Your kind of beauty cut right through me
Now it's time to forget

Well I'm letting you go time will heal the wounds
A fading photograph a love that lay in ruins
We sang and we mingled partied like singles
Dancing at the Rotary
You were delicious every young man's wishes
Look at what you did to me
Oh look at what you did to me

Well I'm letting you go (what you did to me)
Yes I'm letting you go (what you did to me)

Well I'm letting you go and I'll never be the same
Flavors are dull and colors are gray
We loved like legends revving our engines
True as any love could be
You were a vision a beautiful prison
Look at what you've done to me
Oh look at what you've done to me

Oh I'm letting you go (what you did to me)
Yes I'm letting you go (what you did to me)
Oh I'm letting you go (what you did to me)
Yeah I'm letting you go (what you did to me)

So Many People Get it Wrong (steve mayone)

I want to raise you like a good dad should
In a safe and friendly neighborhood
In a healthy happy home
So many people get it wrong

It seems so simple just to do what's right
To love you every day and every night
To read you books and sing you songs
So many people get it wrong
So many people get it wrong

I'm gonna raise a son make him my number one
Different than my daddy done
When he becomes a man I hope he'll understand
Not everything went as planned
So many people get it wrong

When I was little it was tougher times
My daddy struggled just to save a dime
My mama hid her fear in alcohol
So many people get it wrong

But things are better now that you're with me
I promise I will do it differently
Show you a world where you belong
So many people get it wrong
So many people get it wrong

I'm gonna raise a son make him my number one
Different than my daddy done
When he becomes a man but I hope it's understood
I did the best I could
So many people get it wrong
So many people get it wrong

What Good (steve mayone)

What good is life if you don't live it
What good is love if you don't give it
You take a toke and up in smoke goes your wildest dreams
What good's a smile if you don't wear it
What good is love if you don't share it
Your fragile heart it comes apart and now it's ripping at the seams

You wonder what went wrong
You waited far too long
And now you've come undone

What good is hope if you don't bring it
What good's a song if you don't sing it
It seems a lark but all your darkness is making you cry
What good are facts if you don't get it
When you look back you will regret it
You're killing time meanwhile your life is slowly passing you by

You wonder where it went
The time and money spent
And now you're late on rent

You say you can't resist
Kissing tragic lips
Your arms around my hips
We're just two passing ships

What good is wine if you don't drink it
What good's your mind if you don't think it
You talk a lot but you aint got what it takes to succeed
What good are dreams if you don't dare them
What good are schemes if you don't share them
You blow your horn and raise a storm but you're ripping at the seams

What good is life
What good is love
What good's a smile
What good is wine
What good
What good
What good
What good

Sideways Rain (steve mayone/peter mulvey/paul cebar)

I'm sailing into the green and gray
The sky is looking mighty strange
Sailor's warning off the bow
Something tells me I'm in trouble now

I'm running to a new state line
Trying to drive you off my mind
It's too late to turn around
Something tells me I'm in trouble now

Sideways rain sideways rain
Rumbling out of nowhere like a runaway train
Sideways rain sideways rain
And I don't think I'll be the same again

I fell in love so deep
The moment you turned your eyes to me
Walked away from my family and friends
Someone told me you were trouble then

Sideways rain sideways rain
Beating out a rhythm on my window pane
Sideways rain sideways rain
Tell me how will I ever be the same again

I'm flying over guardrail walls
Shot into heaven like a cannonball
My feet don't touch the ground
Something tells me I'm in trouble now

Sideways rain sideways rain
I didn't know what hit me 'til it was toolate
Sideways rain sideways rain
Now I'm more alive than I've ever been
You turned my wheels into a deadly spin
And I guess I'll never be the same again

The Long Way Home (steve mayone)

Hey pretty darlin' whatcha doing now
The bar is closing and they're kicking us out
Looks like you've got nowhere to go
Let me take you the long way home

The night is warm and the skies are clear
Let's ditch these losers and get out of here
And take a stroll beneath the starry dome
Tonight I'm taking you the long way home

Tonight I'm taking you the long way home
Just you and me and the moon above
Turn off the ringer on your cellular phone
Tonight I'm taking you the long way home

The band was playing we were having a ball
The beer was flowing like a waterfall
And when you held me you didn't let go
Tonight I'm taking you the long way home

Tonight I'm taking you the long way home
Just you and me and the stars above
Turn off the ringer on your cellular phone
Tonight I'm taking you the long way home

Tonight I'm taking you the long way home
Just you and me and the moon above
Turn off the ringer on your cellular phone
Tonight I'm taking you the long way home
Tonight I'm taking you the long way home

Rescue Me (steve mayone)

Oh I don't expect you to always read my mind
Please don't feel abandoned when I leave this world behind
But there are certain places that you're not allowed
Remember I still love you when I am hiding out

I know your good intentions it's only 'cause you care
When you are looking for me and can't find me anywhere
This world has worn me out but it's not your fault
Cause I don't expect you to know my every thought

A lighthouse in Aquinnah against a stormy sea
I'm drifting on the water your beacon's guiding me
I'm crossing Devils Bridge but I'll be alright
Cause baby I don't want you to rescue me tonight
To rescue me tonight
To rescue me tonight

Time Moves On (steve mayone)

The day is fading with the setting sun
Everything you had now is gone
Before you got started your race was run
Time moves on
Time moves on
Time moves on without you

Trying to earn a living with your hands
But nobody's hiring an honest man
The jobs have been shipped to foreign lands
The world moves on
The world moves on
The world moves on without you

She was smiling across the bar
A twinkle in her eye like Summer stars
She left with a stranger in his fancy car
Love moved on
Love moved on
Love moved on without you

Oh you tried your best
But your mother always doubted you
She said there's nothing you'll amount to
You started thinking she was right
Now your life's a mess
But you keep your thoughts close to your chest
No one sees your darkness
Hidden in plain sight

Oh you ran with the punks
And the cops always chased you
Arrested and disgraced you
Hung you out to dry
Now you just get drunk
The old punks have all settled down
No one wants to go out
On a Friday night

A dusty old photo in a wooden frame
Two kids smiling on a Summers day
Time to kill and games to play
Life moves on
Life moves on
Life moves on without you
And time moves on
Time moves on
Time moves on without you

Steve Mayone - vocals, acoustic guitar

New Years Resolution (steve mayone/matt keating)

It's that time again to sit down and write my new years resolution
And make a list of all the promises I'll abandon in frustration
Oh it's hard to write when you're cold at night and threatened with eviction
Oh I hope and pray that on New Year's Day I find some kind of salvation

I've been looking hard for any kind of job submitting applications
But nobody's hiring a desperate man who was fired from his last vocation
Oh my back is bent by the one percent who run this whole damn nation
I can't pay my rent and I'm deep in debt money's the only solution

Oh this poor old world is getting screwed by greedy politicians
Who invoke their god to steal and rob and stockpile their munitions
They'll look you in the eye and smile and lie and promise reparations
There's no easy fix to their dirty tricks

Love is the only solution
Love is the only solution
Love is the only solution
Love is the only solution

It's Beautiful (steve mayone)

Your get up and go got up and left
You've never been able to make good things last
Life got sweeter but you got bitter
Time was moving much too fast

Broken china doll is that all you are
I knew you when you had nothing to lose
You were like a bird that everybody heard
Now all you sing are the blues

It's beautiful 'cause it's all fucked up
Love is not a little game
All your dreams went up in smoke today

Beautiful beginners innocent sinners
When we met you were sweet and shy
But life got harder and you became a martry
But I still see the glimmer in your eyes

It's beautiful 'cause it's all fucked up
Life is not an easy ride
All your dreams went up in smoke tonight

It's beautiful
It's beautiful
It's beautiful 'cause it's all fucked up
It's beautiful
It's beautiful so so beautiful

Pretty Mama (steve mayone)

Pretty mama turn your lights down low
I'm coming over just act like you don't know
I've been creeping no time for sleeping
Prowling 'round your window baby let me in
Pretty mama turn your lights down low

Pretty mama lay your burden down
I know you're lonely just don't make a sound
I've been haughty a little naughty
Standing by your window baby let me in
Pretty mama lay your burden down

I've been prowling midnight howling
Sniffing 'round your window baby let me in
Pretty mama turn your lights down low
Turn your lights down low
Turn your lights down low
Turn your lights down low

Early Morning Train (steve mayone)

Early morning train rolling down the track
Coming 'round the bend a little too fast
She started tipping sideways she jumped the silver line
This early morning train is running right on time

Tell my wife I love her tell my kids the same
The 5:54 won't be back again
It's my time to be leaving it's my time to ride
I don't think I'll be getting out of this alive

Early morning train tumbling down the track
Flipping on its side and sliding on its back
She came to a rest beside the Shorefront Park
On the banks of the Hudson River everything grew dark

Tell my friends I'll miss them tell 'em to have fun
I died a happy man I had a good long run
But it's my time to be leaving it's my time for flight
I don't think I'll be getting out of this alive

Strange Bird (steve mayone)

Too weird to live too rare to die
Two little wings too tired to fly
Too strong a wind coming down from the north
Pitching him sideways blown off course

Oh strange bird strange bird fly away
This world was never meant for you anyway
Strange bird strange bird sleep in the sand
Find your way to heaven's door and take your savior's hand

Too numb to feel the stinging rain
Burning his eyes and whipping his face
Too small a bird to hold back the night
Two little wings too weary to fight

Oh strange bird strange bird fly away
This world was never meant for you anyway
Oh strange bird strange bird sleep in the sand
Find your way to heaven's door and take your savior's hand

Too weird to live too rare to die
Too big to run too small to survive
I still hear your wings flap in my room
Oh strange world this bird was not meant for you
Oh strange world this bird was not meant for you

Save You (steve mayone/susan cattaneo)

Why'd you call me at 3 AM
We've never been the closest of friends
You said you thought I was a solid rock
But I'm floating free with no anchor to drop
You and me we're just a couple of dead ends

Now why'd ya wanna throw it all away
Turn off the light on this beautiful day
You say there's no more stories to tell
And your life has been a living hell
And it'd be easier for everyone if you went away

I wanna save you
But I don't know how to
It's 'cause I'm the same too

Sometimes a man aint got no hope
At the end of the day at the end of his rope
And so I lie and say there's brighter days
That there's silver linings in all our grays
But we enter and leave this world all alone

I wanna save you
But I don't know how to
It's 'cause I'm to blame too

I wanna save you
Please show me how to
Cause there's nothing left to lose
On this beautiful day (why'd ya go and throw it all away)
On this beautiful day (why'd ya go and throw it all away)
On this beautiful day (why'd ya go and throw it all away)
