about
Steve Mayone
Bedroom Rockstar 1978-1999
This is a warts-n-all, bones in the closet project. These recordings were archived and culled from home albums I made between 1978 and 1999. These are the original mixes. I added very little in the way of audio fixing - a touch of Limiter, a dash of a Compressor, a sprinkle of EQ - but I left in the hiss and other analog anomalies associated with cassette decks and reel-to-reel machines. Then in the 90's I used early digital platforms such as ADAT tapes and Pro Tools.
I started writing songs in 1977, and the love for recording was simultaneously born: assembling the musicians, producing the song, then collecting the songs into an album. I'm still on that mission to make the perfect album.
These recordings wouldn't have been possible without the many friends I dragged with me along the way. To the best of my memory, I listed those involved in the songs below. If I made a mistake in the credits, let me know. I've listed the copyright as 2017; the years these songs were written and recorded are next to each title.
Thank you to the friends and collaborators who helped me make this beautiful mess. I hope you enjoy these long lost recordings.
LYRICS
Sometimes (steve mayone)
Sometimes I think I'm wrong and sometimes I think I'm right
But what can I say
Sometimes I know I'm wrong and sometimes I know I'm right
I am ashamed
I'll never show my face
Sometimes I think I'm wrong and sometimes I think I'm right
But what can I say
Sometimes I know I'm wrong and sometimes I know I'm right
I am ashamed
I'll never show my face
James Tsyuki - drums
Jeff Mayone - electric guitar
Steve Mayone - vocals, electric guitar
Recorded on cassette tape (Scarsdale, NY) 1978
Lonely Man (steve mayone)
Cry of the lonely man cry of the fool
I'm crying for you
Cry of the only man is all I can do
I'm crying cause I need you
But I'll always be true
Until the end
All you can do
Is say let's be friends
Cry of the lonely man wears worn out shoes
It's not to get to you
Cry of the lonely man is how I feel
Life's one big wheel
Cause it rolls away
And never stops
You can't turn back
The years you lost
Phil Steinberg - drums
Andrew Erdman - bass
Jay Blumenfield - eletric guitar
Steve Mayone - vocals, electric guitar
Recorded on cassette tape
Phil's basement (Scarsdale, NY) 1980
Seeing Three (steve mayone)
The life you lead
I'm seeing three
If I had you
To be with me
Was I wrong?
Was I wrong?
If you were blue
And I was there
Please don't look down
Cause I'll be there
The life you lead
I'm seeing three
If I had you
To be with me
Steve Buzbee - drums

However Far (steve mayone)
I will dream of you tonight
However far away you are
Sat upon the farthest star
Then you'll be right by my side
And all the glories that you breathe
Will be close next to me
All I'm doing is wishing
All I dream I want to know
The only thing my dreams are saying
I want you close
I will love you tonight
And all the love you store will be
Right close next to me
I will need you tonight
So I won't be all alone
Staying all night here below
Andrew Erdman - bass, organ
Steve Mayone - vocals, acoustic guitar, drums
Recorded on cassette tape (Scarsdale, NY) 1982
The Thin Line (steve mayone)
The feeling I feel now
I can't describe somehow
It's like the only connection with you is lost
All hope flies out the window
Despair has its cost
As though the thin line between us
I can't even cross
It's as though I lost my last chance
To glance into your eyes
And marvel at the crimson rivers
Flowing through your soul
One more chance to taste your lips
One more chance to hold you close
One more time to say I love you
Before you go back home
The thunder in the distance
Is like gunshots in the night
And the rain that's falling from the sky
Are like teardrops from my eyes
The feeling I feel here
It makes me wonder where
I left my common sense
It's everywhere
The thin line between us
I can't even cross
Steve Mayone - vocals, piano, guitar
Recorded on four track cassette tape (Scarsdale, NY) 1984
Dreamin' (steve mayone/daniel cantor/mark pagani)*
I am up all night with an awake head on my pillow
I dream a lot without closing my eyes
I cry inside as I bid you farewell
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I live my life from one day to the next
I start out clear and I end up perplexed
I'm crying inside as I say goodbye
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
Yes we stayed up talking for hours on end
about relationships and hearts that may never mend
We talked until we cried and then we said goodnight
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
I've been dreamin' a lot of you
Daniel Cantor - drums, percussion, xylophone, vocals
Mark Pagani- guitar, vocals
Steve Mayone - vocals, bass

The Great Deceiver (steve mayone)
I can't fake a smile when I have poor health
Cause when I lie to you lord I lie to myself
I build a wall around me and then I wonder what for
Because these walls that we use to hide the truth we usually ignore
There is no reason to hide like a scared little child
You're only kidding yourself every time that you lie to yourself
Who are really who are trying to be?
Are you being yourself, or are you trying to be like me?
You're the great deceiver on my phone receiver
Copied propaganda all you do is meander
Are you child or man do you have a plan
What's it all about do I have to shout
To make you leave me alone on my telephone
You're the great deceiver
The devil runs rampant in todays society
Well if that's hard to believe take a look at 42nd Street
And in this day of quest and meaning you look up to me in sign of clue
But the answers that you're looking for are all inside of you
There is no reason to plot against the people that you're not
When you're trying to be someone else you're not being yourself at all
Open your eyes to gods gift of life
Don't live your days in darkness don't be taken for a ride
By the great deceiver on your phone receiver
The crimson king in disguise he'll have you hypnotized
Then you'll be the creature of habit like a scared little rabbit
Like a long sharp knife you will have a wife
Who will campaign for your cause but no one will believe her
Oh you're the great deceiver
You're the great deceiver on my phone receiver
Copied propaganda all you do is meander
Are you child or man do you have a plan
What's it all about do I have to shout
To make you leave me alone on my telephone
You're the great deceiver

Weepin' and-a Moanin' (steve mayone/alan anderson)**
Hot highway in the distance looks like a pool of melting cars
And I'm driving far away from you trying to heal these scars
So how was I to know that you would want to leave and go
So now I weep and moan because I'm on my own
Weepin' and-a moaning
Cryin' and-a groanin'
Weeping' and-a moanin' now
We have a love gone past a love I thought would surely last
It must have been infatuation such an ugly situation
So how was I to know that you would want to leave and go
So now I weep and moan becuase I'm on my own
Weepin' and-a moaning
Cryin' and-a groanin'
Weeping' and-a moanin' now
Now, now, now
So how was I to know that you would want to leave and go
So now I weep and moan becuase I'm on my own
Weepin' and-a moaning
Cryin' and-a groanin'
Weeping' and-a moanin' now
Now, now, now
We had such a love together
Like the flame before the ember
Do you own the time you're lending
Could this really be the ending
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
Towards an unknown destination
I don't care about my location
I guess your love was just inflation
Seeking out some reparation
Weepin' and-a moaning
Cryin' and-a groanin'
Weeping' and-a moanin' now
Now, now, now

I Wonder Why (steve mayone)
People talk of pain and war
Does anybody love each other anymore
Innocence is just a word I hear
Cause everybody's living in the shadow of fear
People break each others hearts each day
Why do we cause we cause each other pain
No one ever lets their feelings out
Cause everybody's living in shadow of doubt
I've got is all on the tips of my fingers
Got it all or so I say
But something's wrong of you're leaving me today
People 'round me walk in a foggy haze
Blank expressions on every face
We're judged by the color of our skin
Why why don't we just let each other in
I've got is all on the tips of my fingers
Got it all or so I say
But something's wrong of you're leaving me today
I've got is all on the tips of my fingers
Got it all or so I say
But something's wrong of you're leaving me today
Hey hey
Hey hey
People talk of pain and war
Why don't we just love each other anymore
I've got is all on the tips of my fingers
Got it all or so I say
But something's wrong of you're leaving me today
I've got is all on the tips of my fingers
Got it all or so I say
But something's wrong of you're leaving me today
Hey hey
Hey hey

Still The Same Man (steve mayone/alan anderson)**
Some tenderness was shared
Did we really care
Or was it just a passing phase of fancy
I guess you should have guessed
That I loved you above the rest
And I would have told you then if you had asked me
But the time we shared was short
Just enough to sow the seed
Did we really love each other
Was it fate or need
And though time has passed
I'm still the same man
As we talked our feelings out
It brought to light my doubt
Or did you think my heart was simply lazy
Oh but I think you could see
All the love for you in me
And I did all that I could to make it easy
But the time we shared was short
Just enough to sow the seed
Did we really love each other
Was it fate or need
And though time has passed
I'm still the same man
Oh I'm still till the same man
Yes I'm still the same man
Oh I'm still the same man
I still love you best
That hasn't changed
Cause I'm still the same man
Oh I'm still the same man
Yes I'm still the same man
Yes I'm still the same
Alan Anderson - vocals, acoustic guitar
Steve Mayone - vocals, acoustic guitar

The Longest Day Of The Year (steve mayone)
The longest day of the year
Was when you kissed me and help me tight
and then you said goodbye
That was
A day I will not forget
It stood so still like an old oak tree
It took the best part out of me
Hath September, May and June
It seems the best things leave too soon
And I will not go easily
No I will not go easily
Steve Mayone - vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin
Recorded on four track cassette tape (Minneapolis, MN) 1991
Night Falls (steve mayone)
Mysterious how your grip on me
Makes me delirious yeah and I cannot see
Oh I'm blinded by my want for you
And I'm dying for the things we do
And I'm lost inside these blues
A story line of a boy and girl
In each others eyes they were the world
Yeah but the girl left the boy and the boy fell apart
Yeah the girl left the boy with a broken heart
And this boy is afraid of the dark
When the night falls
My heart cries out loud for you
When the night falls
For my best defense I have no use
Cause I cannot run when darkness calls
Deep inside lies a little place
Where I like to hide behind my face
Where the world will not know that I'm lost or alone
Where a heart like mine can find a home
Cause I'm worthless when darkness comes
When the night falls
My heart cries out loud for you
When the night falls
Any fight with night I'm sure to lose
Cause I cannot run when darkness calls
When the night falls
When the night falls
My heart cries out loud for you
When the night falls
For my best defense I have no use
When the night falls
Yeah my heart cries out loud for you
When the night falls
Any fight with night I'm sure to lose

The Chance I'll Have To Take (steve mayone)
That's just the chance I'll have to take
I don't know how else I can make you stay
Except to make you leave this home
And hope you come back on your very own
That's just the price I'll have to pay
A loveless life is such an awful fate
We can't carry on like this
And yet to keep you is my only wish
I spend my days teetering between
Why you must stay and why you must leave
That's just the chance I'll have to take
I'm feeling lucky but I know that's fake
And if you choose to not return
I'll stand in silence as the seasons turn
Steve Mayone - vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, tambourine
Recored on four track reel to reel
Barbara Herson's house (Newton, MA) 1993
The Sky Is Falling (steve mayone)
Oh the sky is falling all around my head
And the there's something calling me back to my bed
Oh the sky is falling all around my feet
Oh there's something telling me I'm incomplete
All I really did today
Was watch the sky turn blue to gray
Spinning on this massive rock
I don't go out cause I might fly off
Yes the sky is falling and there's nothing I can do
Oh the sky is falling all around my shoes
And I've never had a worse case of the blues
Oh the sky is falling and no one seems to care
That we'll have a mess of sky everywhere
All I really did today
Was feel so small I could float away
I've got no plans for this life here
I think I'll up and disappear
Cause the sky is falling and no one's calling me
Yes the sky is falling and I can't fight gravity
Oh the sky is falling
Yeah the sky is falling

Come On In (steve mayone)
Come on in, the water's fine
Everybody's having a real good time
Come on in, the water's fine
And everybody's having a real good time
It's not what you've got but what you do with it
It's not what you've got but what you do with it
It's not what you've got but what you do with it
So baby don't stop please don't you ever quit
Come on in, the water's fine
Everybody's got a great big smile
Come on in, the water's fine
And everybody's having a real good time
It's not what you've got but what you do with it
It's not what you've got but what you do with it
It's not what you've got but what you do with it
So baby don't stop now don't you ever quit
Don't you ever quit

Goodbye 20th Century (steve mayone)
Standing on the eve of a brand new century
Has got me feeling down cause I liked the old one around
But everything must change so I'll go with this ball n' chain
But where will you be in a hundred years?
It started off strong I found my something-to-live-for
I was thinking twenty or more, but it was only three or four
What have I done on this eve of the millenium
To find a love like that will take a hundred years
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
I've got no one to hold as we watch number twenty fold
But I'll be somewhere deep with my head between my knees
Oh will we have this ground to always kick around
What have we learned in one hundred years?
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye
Goodbye 20th century, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

When I See You (steve mayone/michael koppelman)^
When I see you I will kiss you
Once for every day I missed you
When I see you I will smile
Once for every lonely mile
When I see you I will give you
The gentle love that lovers live to
When I see you I stop thinking
Eyes and heart and soul are drinking
Every single drop of you
I feel heaven when I see you
When I see you
When I see you I will hold you
And keep you with me like I told you
When I see you I will sigh
Once for every year I pined
When I see you I stop thinking
Eyes and heart and soul are drinking
Every single drop of you
When I see you I stop thinking
Eyes and heart and soul are drinking
Every single drop of you
I feel heaven
You
I feel heaven when I see you
When I see you
When I see you
